Las Vegas Sun Interview[
LAS VEGAS SUN]
This interview was pretty challenging to write, seeing as David and the interviewer weren't in a quiet place. Everybody was talking and so forgive me if there are more question marks than usual, lol.Interviewer: What's it been like so far?
David Archuleta: It's been a lot of fun. We've just started... uh, Monday? Tuesday! It was Tuesday. 'Cause we had Tuesday, Arizona, and then Wednesday was... San Diego, I think?
I: Yeah.
DA: Then Thursday was Fresno, and then Friday was a day off and now we're here.
I: What do the shows feel like?
DA: They're really exciting. There're so many people, and the crowd's so crazy and scream-y [giggles]. It's been a lot of fun. I didn't expect them to be as supportive as they're going to be, because I heard that the past Tours weren't doing too well. So I thought, "I'm just going to sit back and let them enjoy." But they really reacted.
I: Did they bring the signs and everything?
DA: Yeah.
I: Can you see them?
DA: Yeah, I can.
I: I mean, they want to know whether you can see them, too [laughs].
DA: I can. It's crazy. It's a lot of fun, just to see the support that people--the ones that come out and see you perform. Because sometimes you feel like, it's the end of the road for you or some'n
(Ehehe, some'n some'n), with the support, but it's still there. It's neat.
I: What was it like for you on the show, when you had to talk after songs and things like that? Are you dealing with that, too, having to talk to those people all the time?
DA: Talking to people--that's a challenge I have [giggles]. Everyone here doesn't have as big of an issue as I do, but it's good to work on it, and learn how to do it better. It's good practice, that's for sure. But, uh... it's all your own experience. Just a matter of going through it and that's how you learn. Learn through (???)
(Sorry, he mumbled that last part, I didn't catch it.)I: During the time--these months, between now and the show and the Tour, did you have any time for yourself to go back home and to do any un-Idol things? What did you do for yourself?
DA: We went to New York after the Finale, and did a lot of press, then we had a week off at home, and that was really nice. It was great. I went to Lake (???) with a bunch of my friends. They went for their senior trip. They let me go because it was kinda like I was leaving too. In a way, I guess.
I: Yeah, from school and stuff.
DA: Yeah, so it was really nice. I didn't go outside on the water or anything but I stayed inside and just relaxed.
I: Did you have to take care of yourself that way? Watch out, be careful because of all the stuff that was coming up?
(Geez, I had to replay that 5 times... somebody was yelling in the background, "Don't forget to bring your log!" XD I think that was Brooke...)DA: It was just a matter of making sure you don't get too dehydrated or sick or anything.
I: Are you getting to know everyone more? I guess, now, 'cause you're on the bus and doing all this stuff?
DA: Yeah, these are the people I've spent the last 6 months of my life with. So we've gotten to bond [giggles]. It's kinda like school.
I: You didn't have roomates during the TV season, did you?
DA: I had Chickezie as a roomate.
I: Did you? Okay.
DA: But then he left and so it was just me and my dad. It used to be me, my dad and Chikezie.
I: Is your dad on the Tour?
DA: Yeah, he is.
I: So are people being nicer to him?
DA: Yeah! I think people have realized--I think a lot of it had to do with the show and they needed some dramatic thing, I guess.
I: You weren't giving much to pick on, either.
DA: It was kind of annoying that, you know, it's like, they didn't have anything so they had to find another way that they could disprove just by watching me, I guess. It was really annoying.
I: There was really no scandal background for you or anything.
DA: I think it was more just trying to find something negative to focus on. Because now that it's over, people have stopped. I think that's
really interesting.
I: Did it upset him?
DA: It did. It bugged our whole family. I mean, it's just like, "Oh my gosh, what's the big deal?" I don't think it mattered as much before, because there were other parents there. But when they got voted off--their kids weren't there anymore--it brought attention to my dad, I guess, and him being a parent. I don't know. It was just weird how that all worked out. I didn't even realize what was going on until--
I: I wondered how you guys were [seeing of all that stuff(?)]
DA: I didn't hear any of it until so-- there was a point where every single interview I did, they were more interested in that than anything else I was doing, even the competition. It's like, "That's not even part of my life." It's so annoying because I had to talk about this non-existent thing. It was really getting on my nerves. It's like, "'Kay, that's the least of my worries right now."
I: What are you gonna sing? Do you get to pick stuff?
DA: They want me to do certain songs that they thought people would want to hear. Some songs I just didn't want to sing because I didn't want to lose the moment that it had on the show. I just wanted to keep that there, with some of the songs. There are songs from the show, and there's one I didn't do on the show. It's fun. So it's like, there are songs that they didn't want me to do. There was a song I wanted to do-- just kinda like, balance it because I [did/didn't(?)] want to do a more emotional song. So there's that
I: Were you trying to express, sort of, messages? It seemed like every song you picked you wanted to-- and they sorta got frustrated with you, it seemed. You wanted to present a cohesive kind of, "Let's do good things."
DA: Yeah, that's what I wanted to do, really. I guess--ah, I don't know. They always didn't want--I don't know. I guess it kinda bugged them. It was funny when Simon [did get annoyed by it (?)] and then he saw--then I sing the Chris Brown song afterwards. He was like, "Oh, well, that didn't fit you." It's like, "Well, you're the one complaining last song that [giggles]--"
I: Are you guys seeing him or any of them at all in this Tour?
DA: No, I haven't seen them. I think they might be coming to the later shows.
I: Or maybe LA or something.
DA: Yeah, that's probably where everyone's going.
I: Do you have anything sort of [flushed out(?)] as far as--?
DA: We're doing some radio songs but I'd like to also do some more emotional, expressive(?) songs. Like, the ones that have changed my life.
I: You're also made for it.
DA: Yeah, I guess. Even if I'd like to do the radio stuff, I guess it just doesn't suit me
too much. So that's what's hard to do, especially here in the US. It's either you're a really artist-y kind of person, or you're a really radio kind of person, so it's a matter of finding a combination of that. I think, as I get older, I'll be able to have more flexibility. Right now, I guess I don't mind doing the radio stuff, because that's the music I grew up around, listened to.
I: You're still 17, right?
DA: Yeah. That's the stuff I listen to.
I: So what did you do in Vegas while the rest of them were out?
DA: I spent time with my dad's aunt who lives here. And just, uh, ate. I don't know. Didn't do too much. Just kind of, laid back.
I: So you didn't go look around or see any of that kind of stuff?
DA: I did. We ate at the Paris Hotel. It was pretty good.
